Aciclovir
Indications/Uses
HSV infections of the skin including initial & recurrent genital herpes & herpes labialis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Apply 5 times daily at approx 4 hrly intervals omitting nighttime application. Apply to lesions or impending lesions as soon as possible, preferably during earliest stages (prodrome or erythema). May start during later (papule or blister) stages. Continue for at least 4 days for herpes labialis & 5 days for genital herpes, may be continued for up to 10 days if healing has not occurred.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to aciclovir, valaciclovir, propylene glycol.
Special Precautions
Not recommended for application to mucous membranes, eg, in the mouth, eye or vagina, as it may be irritant. Severely immune-compromised patients (eg, AIDS patients or bone marrow transplant recipients).
Adverse Reactions
Uncommonly, transient burning or stinging, mild drying & flaking of skin, itching. Rarely, erythema & contact dermatitis. Very rarely, immediate hypersensitivity reactions including angioedema.
